Darcy AI

Darcy AI is a computer vision AI solution that helped schools, churches, and businesses reopen safely during the Covid pandemic. Darcy checked for fevers, face masks and tracked symptoms scanning QR code badges made with the Darcy AI app.

As Lead UX and Brand Designer for Darcy AI, I oversaw hardware and software design, branding, and marketing and helped the company go from concept to pilot in 90 days, collaborating closely with the founders to ensure scalability for future use cases.

Highlights

My Role: Product owner + lead designer
  • Unlocked school + church + SMB revenue
  • Generated revenue for Edgeworx
  • Checked in 2,000 visitors/day
  • Automated reporting tasks
  • Pressure tested Edgeworx Cloud

Before

Businesses, schools, and churches were struggling to stay open due to government-mandated Covid guidelines. The manual process of monitoring visitors for Covid symptoms was both inefficient and costly. This situation created a need for a scalable, automated solution that could ensure safe reopening and continuous operation while complying with changing health regulations.

Schools and business were closed, We had an opportunity to help them stay open and create a “killer app” for computer vision use cases.

After

I lead the design of a fully responsive web application for automated checkins, real-time alerts, live monitoring, and dashboard reporting enabling SMBs, schools and churches to quickly and safely reopen.

Key Features

  • Active checkin or passive monitoring
  • “Darcy Pass” Wellness survey apps for iOS and Android
  • Real-time alerts, live viewing, dashboard and reports
  • Responsive web app: kiosk, desktop + mobile experiences

Challenges

I lead working sessions and discussions with our founders and subject matter experts to better understand our business needs and how we might leverage this opportunity. I interviewed school administrators and toured schools to get a better understanding of the needs of students, parents, staff and other visitors.

Business

  • Ensuring staff, visitor, and community safety
  • Restoring revenue streams responsibly
  • Manual processes + operational inefficiencies
  • EGX needs revenue + edge AI use cases

Users

  • Personal health and safety concerns
  • Diverse user groups with varying needs
  • Long lines and bottlenecks during check-ins
  • People were sick of Covid life

Lean process

Using a lean approach, I gathered just enough information to progress quickly—identifying multiple user roles by engaging with administrators, students, and staff and incorporating evolving government guidelines. This focused groundwork enabled a rapid solution for immediate needs while setting the stage for broader industry applications.

Process Examples

Rapid Research

I conducted interviews with school administrators, toured facilities, and observed the manual check-in process to understand user needs.
  • User interviews uncovered admin needs to report visitor statistics to state government.
  • Observation revealed traffic patterns and optimum locations for both check in stations and pass by units.
  • Observed current checkin processes identifying areas where Darcy would improve efficiency.

Competitors

Our competitive analysis identified key gaps in the market, revealing opportunities to make Darcy a more user-friendly, adaptable, and approachable solution.
  • Competitors designed for trained professionals
Darcy was built for intuitive public use.
  • Many used intimidating “security” themes
Darcy focused on a welcoming, accessible design.
  • Competitor hardware was complex and restrictive
Darcy was easy to set up and develop on.
  • Competitors had one-size-fits-all
Darcy offered multiple form factors for accessibility

Mapping the journey

Ensuring a smooth, intuitive experience for diverse users required mapping unique needs and real-time interactions across varied roles and scenarios.
  • Mapped diverse business and user needs, balancing goals, tech comfort, and physicality to create a fast, inclusive experience.
  • Designed a dual-mode system with both active Check-in for users and Passive monitoring for environments.
  • Built a step-by-step communication framework to guide users smoothly through each phase.
  • Aligned founders, engineering, and support teams by sharing and discussing user needs and journey flows.

unified app: Setup + checkin + monitor + analyze

I designed a fully responsive web app that morphed depending on how it was being used. Technicians could use it from a phone or a tablet to install and calibrate the cameras then set it up as a user facing kiosk. Administrators had the option to view everything live on their phones or computers or see dashboards later
  • Smart camera setup and calibration
  • Darcy kiosk: Check in mode
  • Darcy kiosk: Pass through mode
  • Darcy kiosk: Monitoring mode
  • Dashboard reports + data exports

Designed with future use cases in mind

I worked with our VAR partners providing messaging and marketing materials for them to sell the solution to a broader range of industries.

Brand + MArketing design

  • We aimed to make Darcy welcoming and non-intimidating to appeal to everyday users, unlike competitors who leaned into security-focused, industrial aesthetics.
  • Our brand strategy prioritized trust and comfort, helping users feel confident using the system during stressful times.
  • I created a flexible system that worked across signage, UI, and marketing materials, allowing seamless expansion into different industries.
  • Clear, intuitive signage and interfaces reduced confusion, making the product approachable for non-technical users.
  • I developed cohesive brand materials in weeks, ensuring the product launched on schedule during the pandemic.
